Jeppesen ForeFlight shipped a meaningful cluster of AI-driven features in early July, and the one getting the most attention is ClearNotams — a capability that uses AI to parse and summarize NOTAM content into plain language rather than the wall of cryptic, uppercase text that pilots and dispatchers have been decoding by hand for decades. Alongside it came an AI Connector built on ChatGPT, which lets users query their ForeFlight data — logbook entries, aircraft information, flight history — through a conversational interface. These aren’t radical departures from what the platform already does, but that’s actually the more interesting point.
When the Market Leader Moves, the Floor Rises
Jeppesen ForeFlight occupies an unusual position in the flight planning and EFB market. It’s the dominant platform in general aviation and business aviation, and it’s been steadily pushing into commercial operator territory through the Dispatch product line. When a platform at that scale embeds AI-native capabilities into its core workflow — NOTAM parsing being a particularly high-frequency, high-friction task — it recalibrates what operators now expect from any competing tool.
For vendors in the EFB and flight planning space who haven’t made comparable moves yet, that’s a concrete competitive problem. Jeppesen ForeFlight has always competed partly on breadth and polish; adding AI to routine pre-flight workflows means the baseline for “good” just shifted. Smaller or more specialized vendors will need to either match this kind of embedded intelligence or make a sharper argument for why their focused approach delivers more value in specific operational contexts.

I’d put ClearNotams firmly in the genuine friction-reducer category, not a nice-to-have. Reading through a full NOTAM package has always been a task that needed to be optimized — pilots routinely receive far more NOTAMs in a briefing than are actually relevant to their flight, and it’s become commonplace for crews to start mentally tuning out most of that volume and, as a result, miss information that actually matters. That’s the kind of systemic workflow problem that AI is well-suited to address, and this feels like a meaningful step toward fixing it rather than a feature designed mainly to fill out a release note.
From a market standpoint, it also signals that Jeppesen ForeFlight is willing to automate tasks that were previously seen as requiring human judgment — and to do so in a consumer-facing, low-friction way rather than tucking it behind a toggle in a settings menu. That’s a meaningful product philosophy statement.
It’s also worth looking at where the AI is not being applied: the features announced here are assistive and informational, not decision-making. The ChatGPT connector lets you query your own data; it doesn’t file a flight plan or change a clearance. That framing will matter for regulatory acceptance, and it suggests ForeFlight has thought carefully about where the line is between useful AI augmentation and the kind of autonomous action that would require a very different certification conversation.

For flight departments and operators currently in an EFB evaluation or platform renewal, this release is a useful data point — not because ClearNotams is uniquely available only here, but because it demonstrates the pace at which the market leader is iterating. Platform selection in aviation has always involved a long tail of support, data currency, and integration depth. AI feature velocity is now also a legitimate evaluation criterion, though I think buyers should apply it carefully. The right question isn’t simply whether a vendor has AI features, but whether those features are actually improving the quality of the solution — not just incorporated to check a box. That distinction will separate meaningful capability investment from competitive noise.
On the product side, the ChatGPT connector is probably best understood as both a sincere capability bet and a response to where the broader software market is heading. The industry overall is moving toward embedding more AI across workflows, and it makes sense for a platform in ForeFlight’s position to move with that current rather than wait. That doesn’t make the capability less real — it just means the competitive context and the genuine product intent aren’t mutually exclusive here.
The commercial implication for Jeppesen ForeFlight itself is that these kinds of releases strengthen retention at least as much as they drive new acquisition.
